Permanent Makeup (PMU) FAQs: Everything You Need to Know

Thinking about getting permanent makeup? Here are answers to some of the most common questions my clients ask.

  1. How long does permanent makeup last?

While it’s called “permanent makeup,” it’s not truly permanent. On average, PMU lasts about 2–3 years before fading. Over time, the pigments gradually lighten, so I recommend touch-ups every couple of years to keep the results looking fresh and vibrant. Be advised that there will always be something in the skin and this is why I only just industry top pigments and a soft technique as to not oversaturate the skin to allow fading.

  1. How long does it take to heal?

The healing process typically takes around 7–14 days. Initially, the treated area will appear darker and more intense. As your skin heals, the colour will lighten by 40–60% and soften. During this time, it’s important to follow aftercare instructions, including avoiding water on the area (other than cleaning them) to ensure optimal healing.

  1. Will it hurt?

Most clients are surprised by how little discomfort they feel during the procedure. I use a high-quality topical numbing agent to ensure you’re as comfortable as possible throughout the treatment.

  1. How long does the procedure take?

PMU treatments typically take around 2 hours. This includes mapping out the shape, numbing the area, and performing the procedure itself. I offer a consultation prior to your appointment to patch test and discuss suitability on treatments.

  1. What can I expect after the procedure?

After the procedure, you may experience mild swelling, redness, or numbness for a few hours. The treated area may look darker and the lines thicker at first, but this is normal. Over the next few days, the area will begin to heal, and the colour will soften once the scabs / flaking is gone. Be aware that the colour comes back slightly around week 4.

  1. Who should avoid permanent makeup?

While PMU is safe for most people, it’s not suitable for everyone. You should avoid PMU if:

  • You have active skin diseases or conditions in the treatment area.
  • You’re allergic to cosmetics or pigments.
  • You’re pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You’re taking blood thinners or have a medical condition that affects healing.
  1. How can I prepare for my appointment?

To prepare for your appointment:

  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and blood-thinning medications 24 hours before your procedure.
  • Avoid any skincare treatments (like peels or microdermabrasion) near the treatment area for at least a week.
  • Make sure the skin is clean and free of makeup.
  1. How do I care for my PMU after the treatment?

Proper aftercare is essential for the best results. Here are some tips:

  • Keep the area dry for the first 7–10 days other than cleaining with a cotton round dipped in sterilised water to wipe any lymph away (first 24 hrs) and to keep them clean. You need to treat it like an open wound.
  • Avoid direct sunlight, swimming, and intense exercise during the healing process.
  • Apply any recommended healing balm sparingly, as directed – nothing with petroleum in as this is a barrier. Ideally Aloe Vera Gel, which I supply.
  • Avoid picking or scratching the area as it heals.
  1. Is PMU customisable?

Absolutely! Each treatment is tailored to your individual needs and preferences. From the shape and style to the pigment colour, we’ll work together to create a look that enhances your natural beauty.

  1. Can I still wear regular makeup?

Yes, PMU enhances your natural features but doesn’t replace the need for traditional makeup entirely. For example, you can still wear additional eyeliner, brow products, or lipstick for a more dramatic look when desired.
